Have you ever found it very hard to recognize the site you’d just added to bookmarks (or favorites) menu among a number of other existing sites on your bookmarks menu? This happens because the bulk of the websites out there don’t have a custom icon called favicon. In case you don’t know, a favicon is an icon appearing next to the title of one website in the bookmarks/ favorites menu. This icon also appears in the web browser’s address bar and some other places. Many online work at home entrepreneurs who own a website don’t keep their mind on creating this favicon. For me, I think that it’s an important factor in your general marketing campaign. Because it helps you to mark your website image into the visitors mind. It also helps the visitors easily recognize your site in their bookmark/ favorites menu in case they want to come to your site.

The good news is that creating a favicon is a very simple task. This task can be done in just five minutes and it does not require you any special skill to accomplish. You can follow step-by-step below to create one favicon from pic in five minutes from now.

- Choose one picture that you want to create favicon from. This pic should be related to the main theme of your site. You should save this pic on desktop of your computer so you can easily browse to it later.

- Copy and paste this address to your favorite web browser: http://www.html-kit.com/favicon/ (please keep in mind that this is just one of the favicon generators out there. You can find more other ones by using google).

- Click “browse” at “source image” line. Then find the image you have chosen at step 1.

- You might want to preview your favicon before you download it to your hard driver. If you’re pleased with that file, click “Download Favicon” button to get it.

- Upload only favicon.ico file to your root web directory where your index.html file residing in.

- Add these lines of code between the head tags in your site’s index.html file:

link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.yoursite.com/favicon.ico"
(Note: you have to add '<' at the beginning and '>' at the end of line above. I have cut them out to make sure the code to be showed up on this site)

link rel="icon" href="http://www.yoursite.com/favicon.ico"
(Note: you have to add '<' at the beginning and '>' at the end of line above. I have cut them out to make sure the code to be showed up on this site)

- Press F5 key on your keyboard a few times to let the icon appear.

Now whenever you visit your site, you’ll see an icon that you’ve just created next to the web address line. If you bookmark your site, you’ll see that icon appearing next to the title of your site as well. And if a visitor has a number of bookmarks, this will help your site to stand out among other sites, which don’t have a favicon file.

You’ve known how to create a favicon. You also know that it just takes you a very short time to make favicon. So let me encourage you to create one now to help your visitors to have a chance to go back to your site again.
